Live Abundantly

October 2008 Edition

In this inaugural edition of Live Abundantly we are going to discuss some very practical ways to keep your body healthy through making wise eating decisions. I originally was going to take the scientific approach and explain the chemical reactions and cascades that occur in our human bodies when ingesting different types of foods. Through this explanation I was hoping to educate the public on how to best fuel their bodies and minds for maximum performance and longevity. Then I had a change of heart. I realized people are just too darn busy to care about the science behind staying healthy. Most people simply want practical and easy ways to maintain, or improve their health. So I’ll save the science for a future issue of Live Abundantly.

As a result, I have put together some practical wisdom for the most common situations in which we find ourselves. It is in these situations, that we often find it difficult to stay on a diet, or keep our healthy lifestyle. Here are some suggestions on how to master them:

Restaurants:  We need to avoid what is called the 10-minute problem. Often, when dining out, the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes are the most detrimental to our waist lines. To avoid gaining those extra pounds we need to avoid eating during the first ten minutes when the bread basket is staring at us, and the last ten minutes with dessert.

Here are some healthy alternatives

Skip breads altogether: Have a shrimp cocktail, or tomato juice instead. For dessert, have fruit, sorbet, or even a cappuccino with skim milk.

The Best Alternative:  Have an apple, low-fat yogurt, or some other healthful snack before you go out. You will be surprised how relaxed you are while eating at the restaurant, rather than devouring a couple baskets of bread before your entrée arrives.

Travel:  Do not eat desserts until the last day of your trip. If you eat them earlier, you are likely to do it throughout the entire trip.

Airports:  Stay away from newsstands. They stock high-sugar snacks.  A better alternative would be to bring your own fruit to munch on during your wait.

Watching TV:  Don’t snack in front of the TV. A better alternative is to sip on hot liquids, such as, green tea. Or sip on cool liquids like ice water.

Effective eating strategies wherever you find yourself

1)  Resist cravings for 10 minutes- they may go away.

2)  Avoid going longer than three, or four hours without a healthful snack or meal. Eating at regular intervals will keep your blood sugar more stable and keep cravings at bay.

I hope you try these easy-to-apply tips when you find yourself in these common situations. Your body and your waistline will thank you.

Have a blessed day,

Sifu

 November 2008 Edition

There is more to lowering your cholesterol than taking pills, and staying away from fried chicken. Here are some easy exercises to use wherever you find yourself.

In addition, the benefits of physical activity are numerous. Some are obvious, some are not so obvious. Here are a few benefits that you may not have thought about.

1) Helps prevent bone loss

2) Improves sleep

3) Helps manage stress

4) Helps prevent high blood pressure

5) Helps improve blood cholesterol levels

The common misconception is that you have to join a gym to get optimum physical exercise. This couldn't be further from the truth. You can get in an easy and effective workout at home, at the office, while traveling, or at play. All of the following will help lower you cholesterol.

At Home

A) Do some yard work. Mow the lawn, rake leaves, or work in the garden.

B) Do some housework, such as cleaning, or taking out the trash.

C) Go for short walks- 30 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes after dinner, or both.

D) If your not going too far, walk, or ride a bike, instead of driving.

E) If you have exercise equipment, USE IT !!  Pedal a stationary bike while watching TV.

At The Office

A) Schedule exercise on your daily calendar, and treat it like any other important appointment.

B) Take a walk around your building for a break during the workday, or at lunchtime.

C) Walk up the stairs instead of using the elevator all the time, or get off the elevator a few floors early and take the stairs the rest of the way.

D) Take a stroll down the hall instead of calling someone on the phone.

While Traveling

A) Walk around the airport while waiting for your plane.

B) Stay at hotels with fitness centers, or swimming pools, and use them.

C) Pack a jump rope in your suitcase to use when you travel.

D) Explore your surroundings in new cities, or towns by walking around, or riding a bike.

At Play

A) Get together with friends who enjoy the same physical activities that you do, and do them together.

B) At the beach, get up and walk instead of just sitting.

C) On the golf course, walk instead of using a cart.

Follow these tips and you too will benefit from daily physical activity, which in turn, can increase your longevity.

Have a blessed day,

Sifu

When most of us think about investing, the picture that first comes to our minds is one of money.  Thoughts of the stock market, or real estate, precious metals, or maybe even people wearing suits and carrying briefcases could possibly enter your thoughts next.  If this sounds like you, no worries, you are not alone.  Most of us, including yours truly, have the same collective mindset.  After all, this is how we have been taught, or told, how to think.  I, like many of you, believe I need to save for the future, invest some of that savings, in order to grow my money, so that I can fund my future and that of my family.  This is Not wrong.  It is good and the prudent thing to do.  However, there are other things that we need to be investing in that produce even greater, AND MORE SECURE returns on our investments.

First of all, what good is all of your hard work, saving, and investing, if you are not around to enjoy any of it here on earth.  If you do not take care of yourself than you are just spinning your wheels. Many of us find ourselves working for the almighty dollar, but we never take the time to relax and enjoy the fruit of our labor. For those of you who fit into this category, guess what?  There is a better way!!  Here is the secret.  One of the very best investments you can make is to invest in yourself

So what does investing in oneself mean?  It means, actually scheduling relaxation time into your calendar, Blackberry, or Palm Pilot.  You must change your mindset and teach yourself to value your relaxation time equally with your work time.  Believe it or not, stress is one of the major causes of disease in America.  When we take the time to truly relax our minds, thoughts, emotions, and bodies, we give ourselves a chance to be renewed, revived, and restored.

Here are a few items that should be incorporated into your relaxation time:

     A)  Sleep- Increase your daily amount of uninterrupted sleep. When you do this you allow your body to actually begin to heal itself.

     B)  Laughter-  Did you know that happier thoughts lead to essentially a happier biochemistry.  Laughter is truly the best medicine and leads to a happier and healthier body.  If people knew how powerful their thought-life really is they would take more action in governing their thoughts.  I will focus entirely on this particular topic in the next issue of Living Abundantly

     C)  Fresh air-  In our technologically-advanced society we have many wonderful conveniences.  However, one of the unintended consequences of these conveniences is that we have become very sedentary, and always "plugged in".  This, coupled with fast-food, is one of the major causes of obesity in the United States.  The good news is that we each have the power to break this ridiculous cycle.  Here is the simple formula:  Unplug from technology for a few hours every day, walk outside of the building you are inside currently, find an area populated mainly with trees, walk around for a long time, breath deeply throughout your walk. All the while, observe only those things which man did not create.  Enjoy.  Repeat this process, often. Preferably on a daily basis.

Please, take the time to invest in yourself. The steps above are easy, but most of us fail due to one factor. We fail to schedule it into our day.  You will succeed if you actually make it an appointment just as if it were a meeting at work.

Continue to work, save, and invest for the future.  But, in order to enjoy the fruit of all of your labor, start now and make the very best investment.  The investment that will allow you to enjoy all other investments. This is the investment in Yourself.

Have a blessed day,

Sifu  Petree

The word "Change" has been thrown around a lot recently. Unfortunately, there are two manifestations of change. There is change for the Good, and change for the Bad. Here is the secret- You may not be able to control Congress, the presidency, or Wall Street, but you can control yourself, if you know how.  This edition will give you the 3 puzzle pieces to affect positive change in your life.

Sometimes we get bombarded with so much mental stimulus, that things seem to be out of control. It can almost seem as if the air is saturated with negativity, and crisis. Some of this is truth, some of this is manufactured. Regardless of its origin, it can, on occasion make you feel helpless, or angry, or overwhelmed.  The following paragraphs are your keys to not only dealing with this, but overcoming it and making sure the changes in your life are positive.

What is the all encompassing rule, by which, you affect positive change?  The answer is:  Focus on what you CAN control, not on what you CAN'T control.   So what are some very important areas that you CAN control?

     1)  Your own attitude. You may not have realized this before today, but your attitude is your responsibility, no matter what happens.  How is your attitude influenced and formed on a daily basis?  It is influenced by  what you hear, what you read, what you watch on TV, and very much by the people around you.  Guess what? You have control over most, if not all, of these variables. You don't have to watch the Jerry Springer show, or Ophra, or Gilmore Girls. You CAN choose to remove those influencing factors from your life.  Yes, you can also limit the time spent with negative people, even if you can't remove them altogether from your company.  You have the power to make it happen. It is simply a choice. Actively choose to have a good attitude, and you will.

     2)  Your own words. This may be some news to you. The words you speak actually carry some weight.  I'll quote a famous book, it's called the Bible. It says, "Life and Death are in the power of the tongue". What does that mean? It means that when you speak, if you speak encouragement, love, or other positive things, you will actually breathe life into action in that particular situation.  Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. If you speak negativity, hate, gossip, etc., you will actually  breathe bad  stuff into action in that particular situation.

     3)  The actions you take. First and foremost, you must take full and complete responsibility for everything you do. Second, your life consists of, and is a result of the actions that you take. Essentially, your life is a product of your actions.  For example, if in the past you made poor choices, those choices probably have landed you in a not-so-great position today. The inverse is also true.   However, there is good news. The future is still yours to write.  Here is the important part- You are writing it right now!  All you have to do is start making the right choices today.

Here is how it all works together

Your thoughts shape your attitude. Your attitude affects the type of words that come out of your mouth. Your thoughts, attitudes and words help form your beliefs. As a result, your beliefs lead to your actions.  What is the best strategy then for positive change? Start with your thoughts. Be vigilant, and consistent in throwing out bad and negative thoughts throughout your day. Then, actively replace those with positive thoughts. In other words, catch it early and it will be much easier to change.

Have a blessed day,

Sifu

The One Thing You Never Knew About Your Weight: Sleep More, Lose More

When patients see Louis Aronne, MD, past president of the Obesity Society and author of the book The Skinny, they are as likely to have their sleep assessed as their eating habits.  If patients are getting less than seven to eight hours, Dr. Aronne may prescribe  more shut-eye rather than the latest diet or drug. With more sleep, he says, "they have a greater sense of fullness, and they'll spontaneously lose weight."

Why? University of Chicago researchers reported that sleep deprivation upsets our hormone balance, triggering both a decrease in leptin (which helps you feel full) and an increase in ghrelin (which triggers hunger).  As a result, we think we're hungry even though we aren't-and so we eat. Indeed, sleep may be the cheapest and easiest obesity treatment there is.

Growing up, my Aunt Lois always used to say, “Variety is the spice of life”. She is definitely right about that. I took her advice and am a better person because of it. To this day, new adventures bring great joy to my soul.  Recently, I have found even more truth hidden in her words. These new findings will not only enrich your soul, but also enliven your physical bodies.

By slightly tweaking her statement from, “variety is the spice of life”, to the statement, “A Variety of Spices Could Lengthen Your Life”, we can uncover a bevy of health benefits. The key is to find which spices have the greatest effect, if any, on your health. Here are the most recent medical findings.

Spices and herbs not only boost the flavor of your food, they also boost your health. Powerful plant compounds known as phytochemicals are found in high concentrations in many spices and herbs. Phytochemicals help fight heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, arthritis and other diseases.

Here are the seasonings to add liberally to your food as often as possible. Unless otherwise noted, fresh herbs and spices offer a higher concentration of phytochemicals, but dried still are powerful.

Super spices

The following spices have been shown to be particularly beneficial to our health…

Cinnamon - Cinnamon has an almost medicinal power. Recent studies have shown that cinnamon enhances the metabolism of glucose and cholesterol and thus may provide protection from type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

A study reported in Diabetes Care highlighted cinnamon’s favorable impact on the blood fat levels of people with type 2 diabetes.

After eating one to six grams (about one-quarter to one-and-one-quarter teaspoons) of cinnamon daily for 40 days, overall levels of unhealthy blood fats dropped significantly – up to 26% for total cholesterol and 30% for triglycerides (a type of blood fat).

Even healthy people can benefit from cinnamon’s impact on blood sugar, according to a study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Adding cinnamon to rice pudding significantly decreased the test subjects’ normal, post dessert elevations of blood sugar.

Interestingly, at least some of this effect was related to the spice’s ability to delay how quickly food leaves the stomach and enters the intestines.  In this regard, cinnamon also may be helpful in reducing appetite and hastening weight loss by enhancing satiety (the feeling of fullness).

Suggested uses: Cinnamon can be added to oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, pumpkin and apple dishes, coffee and tea, and rice and beans for an Indian touch.

Turmeric – Curcumin (turmeric’s active ingredient) is one of the most potent, naturally occurring anti-inflammatory agents ever identified and thus may be one of the best all-around spices for disease protection and antiaging. Inflammation plays a central role in most chronic diseases.

Turmeric also can be considered “brain health food.”  Research studies on mice demonstrate turmeric’s ability to reduce the build up of plaque in the brain that is associated with Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline.  Laboratory research has shown that turmeric also has potent anticancer properties.

Suggested uses: Add turmeric to your favorite bean, poultry, seafood, tofu, and rice dishes, as well as to soups and stews.  Turmeric often is used in classic Indian dishes, such as curries.

Cilantro – Cilantro is high in the vitamins A and K and beta-carotene, and like any dark, leafy green, it is full of beneficial phytochemicals, including a natural antibiotic called dodecenal. In a University of California, Berkeley, laboratory study, dodecenal killed the bacteria Salmonella more effectively than a powerful prescription antibiotic.

Suggested uses: Add fresh, chopped cilantro to salsa, guacamole, omelets, salads, soups and stews.

Ginger – Ginger is an anti-inflammatory superstar. It suppresses the action of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. And for people plagued with motion sickness or morning sickness or experiencing postoperative nausea and vomiting, ginger – fresh or dried – has proved to be an effective and safe option. The phytochemicals in ginger also are valuable for boosting immunity, especially to combat viral infections.

Suggested uses: Dried powdered ginger is even more potent that fresh.  Add it to sauces and salad, poultry or seafood. You also can add a thumbnail-size piece of raw ginger to hot tea. Ginger is delicious in its candied form, and pickled ginger is perfect with sushi.

Parsley – One tablespoon of fresh parsley provides more than half of the daily recommended value of vitamin K. It’s also rich in vitamin A, lutein, and zeaxanthin (which promote eye health) and provides nature’s most concentrated source of flavonoids, plant pigments that provide health benefits. Parsley is among those plants that may be particularly useful for combating cancer, allergies and heart disease.

Suggested Uses: Add fresh chopped parsley to salads, pasta rice dishes, soups and stews. Parsley is a main ingredient in the Mediterranean cracked wheat dish tabouli.

Rosemary - This savory herb contains phytochemicals that can reduce the formation of cancer-causing compounds known as heterocyclic amines (HCAs)

HCAs can form when the proteins in meat are heated to high temperatures.

Preliminary research also indicates that rosemary may enhance insulin sensitivity, improving the action and efficiency of insulin in the body, aiding in a healthy metabolism and slowing the aging process. And it turns out that Shakespeare’s Ophelia wasn’t all that far off when she said that rosemary is for remembrance. According to a study in Journal of Neurochemistry, rosemary contains the compound carnosic acid (CA) which helps protect the brain.

Suggested Uses:  Always add one teaspoon of dried rosemary, or a tablespoon or two of fresh to a pound of meat before grilling hamburgers. Rosemary also is good in lamb and potato dishes, soups and stews.

So what is the main takeaway from all of this knowledge?  Well, for starters, I will quote my Sigung in Kung Fu. He always says, “Knowing is not enough, you must apply”. That means that it is fine to read about the adventures of others, just as it is fine to read about how to live healthier. However, the fun comes from getting out there and trying it for yourself.

Bon Appetite,

Sifu Jonathan Petree

 4th Quarter 2009 Edition

The following prevention advice is not just for kids – although contact with germs inevitably increases when kids (and teachers) return to school in the late early fall.  If you, or your children have a history of being vulnerable to common colds or flu during the school year, there are a few simple lab tests to rule out hidden problems. Check for anemia, as well as low levels of vitamin B12 and /or folic acid – all can increase susceptibility to colds and flu.

Hand washing is an obvious, but underutilized, method of preventing disease. Try to void the triclosan-containing antibacterial soaps – these are contributing to the invasion of superbugs. Use plain soap with warm water and vigorously rub the hands together for at least 20 seconds after every dubious encounter, before and after eating or preparing food, after using the bathroom, handling money, doorknobs, and the mail. Ideally, avoid all sugar and processed foods. Certainly avoid these ingredients at the first hint of illness for at least a week.  Get enough sleep. Fatigue causes vulnerability to illness of all kinds.

A favorite preventive for the common cold is good old fashioned cod liver oil – 1 teaspoon a daily for children and 1 tablespoon daily for adults.  It comes in lemon, orange, and strawberry flavors, which make it more palatable for kids. Vitamin C is also important. Children should get about 500 mg daily and adults should get 1000 to 2000 mg. You can hardly overdose on vitamin C –it will give you loose stools if you are taking too much, so just cut back to a comfortable level.

There’s a terrific traditional Chinese medicine product called Gan Mao Ling that is effective for shortening a cold, especially one that starts with body aches, chills, and fever. The usual dose is three to four tablets three times a daily for five days, or until symptoms subside.  If your bug is the stomach flu (achy belly, lose stools, no appetite), then Huo Hsiang Cheng Chi Pien, four tablets three times daily will help.

Most common colds are viral, so there is no reason to take antibiotics unless there is proven evidence of a secondary bacterial infection.  Two quality antivirals are zinc (50 mg daily for adults, 15 mg for children) and vitamin A (25,000IU daily; avoid if you are pregnant or nursing).  These can be used preventively, or at the start of symptoms. Vitamin D is also important for staying healthy.  Have your vitamin D levels checked, as most people are low. Vitamin D has emerged as a critical nutrient not just for bones, but also for mood, cell integrity, cancer prevention, and possible prevention of flu viruses. Optimal levels range between 60 and 90 ng/mL.

If you are mostly suffering from a sore throat, try an antiviral liquid containing either eucalyptus or some other mentholated substance (such as Olbas sprays or pastilles).  Listerine (the caramel colored type – not the stuff with blue-green food dye) has eucalyptus as the active ingredient and works well to prevent and treat viral sore throats.  Solutions featuring oil of bitter orange also help to heal a throat infection.

If your cold starts with a cough, hot lemon honey tea can work wonders.  Don’t ever give honey to a child younger than age 1 (it can cause botulism), but older children can benefit greatly from the anti-infective and soothing effects of honey.  If the cold is deep, a Dijon mustard poultice, applied to the chest, can effectively loosen mucus, making it easier to cough up.

There are a few tried-and-true homeopathic remedies for viruses. All the remedies should be taken in 6X potency, three to four pellets three to four times daily for a few days as follows:

-          Allium cepa (onion) especially for a runny nose

-          Ferrum Phosphoricum (iron phosphate) especiall for kids feeling week in the first stage of inflammation

-          Kali carbonicum, especially if complicated by influenza

-          Kali muriaticum, if mucus secretions are thick

-          Belladonna, for a red face, dry throat, and throbbing headache

-          Aconite, for an abrupt onset , fear and anxiety around the illness, restlessness, and no sweating. Stop aconite when sweating begins

I hope these natural remedies help those looking for such a solution.

Have a blessed day,

Sifu Petree

Green Tea Lowers Heart Attack Risk By 30%. Also Fights Cancer,Diabetes, and Stroke

Green tea has remarkable powers to combat disease. I think we all should include green tea in our daily health regimen. If you ask my students, they will tell you that they rarely see me at a class without a mug of hot tea. The following information should persuade most everyone to give green tea a chance.

The leaves of the evergreen shrub Camellia sinensis are used to make green, black and oolong tea, but green tea contains the most epigallocatechin (EGCG). EGCG (a type of plant compound called a polyphenol, flavonoid, or catechin) is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Research shows that chronic low-grade inflammation (produced by an immune system in overdrive) and oxidation (a kind of internal rust that damages cells) are the two processes that trigger and advance most chronic diseases. Evidence shows that green tea can prevent and treat many of these diseases.

Heart Disease and Stroke

Researchers studied 14,000 people ages 65 to 84 for six years. They found that men who drank seven or more cups of green tea a day had a 30% lower risk of dying from heart disease or stroke, and women had an 18% lower risk, compared with those who drank less than one cup of green tea a day.

How it works… Green Tea Can:

1)       Lower blood levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and reduce the oxidation of LDL, which generates the small, dense particles that can clog arteries and cause a heart attack or stroke.

2)       Reduce the activity of platelets, blood components that clump and form artery-plugging clots.

3)       Prevent ventricular arrhythmia, a spasm of the heart muscle that can trigger or worsen a heart attack.

4)       Reduce high blood pressure, a risk factor for stroke.

5)       Improve the flexibility of the endothelium (the lining of the arteries), boosting blood flow to the heart and brain.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and can lead to many other disastrous health problems, including kidney failure, blindness, and lower-limb amputation.

In a study of 60 people with diabetes, those who took a daily supplement of green tea extract for two months significantly reduced hemoglobin A1C-a biomarker of blood sugar levels.

How it works:

People with diabetes who drank green tea for 12 weeks boosted their levels of insulin (the hormone that helps move sugar out of the blood and into muscle cells) and decreased their levels of A1C.

Overweight

More than 65% of Americans are overweight. Those extra pounds are a risk factor in dozens of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoarthritis and type 2 diabetes. Researchers from the Netherlands reviewed 49 studies on green tea and weight loss and analyzed the results of the 11 most scientifically rigorous. They found that drinking green tea “significantly decreased body weight” and “significantly maintained body weight after a period of weight loss.”

Why it works…

EGCG blocks the action of an enzyme that breaks down noradrenaline (NA). This hormone and neurotransmitter stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which controls heart rate, muscle tension and the release of energy from fat. By preserving NA, EGCG triggers your metabolism to stay more active and burn more calories.

Cancer

Researchers have conducted more than 1,000 scientific studies on the ability of green tea and EGCG to prevent and reverse cancer, including the following:

1)       Breast Cancer:  Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health found a 19% reduction in risk among women who drink more than 3 cups of green tea a day and a 27% reduction in risk for breast cancer recurrence.

2)       Colon Cancer:  Japanese researchers studied 136 people with colorectal adenomas (benign tumors that often precede colon cancer). Half of the participants were given a green tea extract.  A year later, only 15%  of those receiving the extract had developed new adenomas, compared with 31% of those who didn’t receive the extract.

3)       Prostate Cancer:  In a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, Japanese researchers found that men with prostate cancer who drank five or more cups of green tea a day had a 48% lower risk of developing advanced prostate cancer, compared with men who drank less than one cup a day.

4)       Lung Cancer:  Chinese researchers found a 22% lower risk among those with the highest consumption of green tea, compared with those who did not consume green tea.

Why it works:

EGCG interferes with cancer through various mechanisms, including stopping the production of factors that stimulate tumor growth and inhibiting movement of cancer cells.

Gum disease

Research links the chronic bacterial infection of gum (periodontal) disease to many health problems, including heart disease and diabetes. Japanese researchers studied nearly 1,000 men ages 49 to 59 and found that those who regularly drank green tea had fewer cases of, or less sever, periodontal disease. For every additional daily cup of tea the men drank, there was a significant decrease in the depth of periodontal pockets (the grooves around the teeth that deepen as gum disease advances), a decrease in the loss of attachment of the gum to the tooth and a decrease in bleeding.

How it works:

The polyphenols in green tea may decrease the inflammation response to oral bacteria.

The Right Amount of Green Tea

To guarantee a sufficient intake of EGCG, one or more of the following strategies are recommended. You can safely do all three.

1)                   Drink green tea. Five to ten eight ounce cups a day of regular or decaf.

Best: For maximum intake of EGCG, use whole-leaf loose tea rather than a tea bag, using one teaspoon per cup. Steep the tea for at least 5 minutes.

2)                   Take a supplement of green tea extract. Minimum: 400 milligrams (mg) a day of a supplement standardized to 90% EGCG.

3)                   Add a drop of green tea liquid extract to green tea or another beverage. Look for a product that is standardized to a high level (at least 50%) of EGCG. And follow the dosage recommendation on the label. Example: HerbaGreen from HerbaSway at 90% polyphenols, 50% from EGCG.

Safe Use

Talk to your doctor before using green tea if you use any of the following:

1)     An antiplatelet drug (blood thinner), such as Warfarin (Coumadin), because green tea also thins the blood.

2)    A bronchodilator for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary  disease, because green tea can increase its potency.

3)    An antacid, because green tea can decrease the effect.

After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again..

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit.
It can also help overcome, or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS:
Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school (England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness

Mosquito bites:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight: and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:

The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control:
Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use:
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress:
Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes:
According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts:
Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe it’s time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

Have a blessed day,

Sifu Petree
